Buy or Don't Try: Mielle Babassu & Mint Deep Conditioner Review

What is it?

Now that I’m natural, wash day (yes, DAY) has become a reality for me. It may not take as long as those with shoulder length hair—in it’s shrunken state—but it definitely doesn’t take me 10 minutes like it did before. As my hair has grown, my interests in trying different products has grown as well. I fight the urge every trip to Target to become a product junkie, but Lord knows I want to try all the things; especially the ones that so many people are claiming to be a holy grail for your hair. After running out of my favorite deep conditioner, a quick search of the best deep conditioners for natural hair led me to Mielle Organics Babassu Oil & Mint Deep Conditioner.

What does it claim to do?

Mielle Organics claims that this product:
• Restores dry and damaged hair
• Reduces frizz and flyaways
• Infuses hair with protein and moisture

According to the website, its main ingredient— babassu oil— “ contains high concentrations of sterols and tocopherols which can improve hair and scalp health”. From what I could find:

  • sterols can enhance the appearance of dry damaged skin by reducing flaking and restoring suppleness

  • tocopherols are a conditioning agent that improve the texture of skin and hair

This product claims to pack a heavy punch but did it live up to its claims?

What did it do for me?

Sis, let me tell you that after using this product I was shook! I was not expecting to like it this much. I thought my hair needed thick creams to actually feel moisturized, but I’ll admit I was wrong. The consistency of this deep conditioner is midway between thin and thick. It won’t stay in your palm if you flip it over, but it also won’t run through your fingers when you scoop it out. It clung to every single one of my strands like a father welcoming back a prodigal son.

Along with that, this conditioner made the detangling process a dream. It provided so much slip that I was able to comb through my hair without any snags. For tightly coiled strands this is a must! I would say this deep conditioner is similar to the Aveda Damage Remedy in it’s ability to melt tangles away, but it definitely costs less.

Speaking of holy grails, I think I just found mine. I’m not going to lie, I feel brand new. It’s like I’ve leveled up my wash and go. I would 10/10 recommend you try this product! I actually like it more than my Texture ID deep conditioner which is saying a lot. I think the ability for this product to coat every strand makes it a game changer. I’m in love. You need this in your life! Trust me. After sitting under the dryer for 30 minutes, my coils were more defined than any other conditioner I’ve used and so soft! This will definitely be a staple in my wash day routine.
